The Roadtrip: Episode I

It's late, but I feel compelled to at least begin recounting the events of the past week for you. If I don't start now, chances are that I'll feel overwhelmed by it all and never post. So, in the interest of progress, here we go.

I had a predicament. I'm moving to Israel on May 23rd to begin cantorial studies at Hebrew Union College (HUC). Imagine, all of my things were in Bloomington, Indiana but those items that are not coming with me to Israel (all except for two suitcases and a carry-on) needed to find their way to the New York area, where I'll resume my cantorial studies after my year in Jerusalem. Simple enough, I could move my things to the east coast and then catch a flight out of New York to Israel. But, I have a car. Normally a good thing. I won't need a car while I'm abroad, nor will I really need it in the years to follow while living in the city. So, my car needs to make its way to my mom's house in the San Francisco area where it will live for the foreseeable future.
Hmmmm. Ok, so. Thanks to the kindhearted nature of my childhood friend (and extended family member) Matt and his mom Maureen, I find that I'll be able to store my belongings in their basement while I'm abroad -- a huge help versus the cost of storage for a year! So then it's just a matter of driving my car out to California and spending a few days with my mom and sister. After which, I'll hop a flight back to JFK with my two suitcases and carry-on en route to Ben Gurion.

In a stroke of impeccably timed blind luck, my friend Miriam tells me that she's moving in with her brother in New Jersey, with all of her belongings, but also needs to deposit her car back home in the San Francisco area. Thus were born the designs of a beautiful partnership and an epic road trip of almost 4,000 miles. We are nearly done with our trip as I type now, but I have plenty of pictures to post and anecdotes to tell when it's not quite so late. Here's just one picture of Miriam and me, only a few hours into our adventure, to tide you over.
To think back on that first day, we were so bright-eyed, bushy-tailed, and optimistic. Haha, ok until next time then, hope you're all doing well!
